Some New York Perspectives on Sectarian Identity: An Audio Postcard

By Jeca Taudte
Edited by David Austin Gura

New York University's Islamic Center draws many of the university's Muslim students and alumni for Friday prayers. On the first Friday in March Columbia Journalism School reporter Jeca Taudte spoke with several of them about sectarianism in Iraq and the meaning of Sunni and Shiite identities in their lives. NYU junior Saba Malik comes from a predominantly Sunni family, but her grandmother is Shiite. Alumni Lina Sayed is from a Lebanese Shiite family, sophomore Saad Rahmat was born in Pakistan, and Maheen Farouqi, an NYU graduate student, is a past president of the university's Muslim Students Association.
